Kaleiçi - literally "inside the castle" - is the historic centre of Antalya, enclosed by old city walls above a small harbour. Its lanes are lined with restored Ottoman houses, many now boutique hotels, cafés and small restaurants. In summer it is hot and crowded; from October to April it is at its best, with mild days, open terraces in the sun and time to wander.
A walk through Kaleiçi
- Hadrian's Gate: the triple-arched Roman gate built for the emperor's visit in the 2nd century AD, the traditional entrance to the old town.
- The Clock Tower and Kalekapısı square: the meeting point between the old town and the modern city.
- The Fluted Minaret (Yivli Minare): the Seljuk symbol of Antalya, visible from all over the centre.
- Hıdırlık Tower: a round Roman tower at the southern edge, with sunset views over the bay and the mountains.
- The Broken Minaret (Kesik Minare): a building that has been a temple, a church and a mosque over the centuries.
- The old harbour: fishing boats and excursion boats under the cliffs, reached by lanes or a lift from the top.
Beyond the walls
Karaalioğlu Park runs along the cliffs from Hıdırlık Tower with views across the bay. The Antalya Museum, one of the richest archaeological collections in Türkiye, lies at the start of Konyaaltı beach and is ideal on a rainy day; check opening hours before you go. East of the city, the Düden waterfalls drop straight off the cliffs into the sea, and the upper falls sit in a shaded park.
Why autumn to spring
| Season | Typical day | In Kaleiçi |
|---|---|---|
| October - November | 22-27 °C | Warm evenings, terraces open, fewer crowds |
| December - February | 15-18 °C | Quiet lanes, sunny cafés, the odd rainy day |
| March - April | 18-22 °C | Orange blossom, green parks, festivals in the city |
| June - August | 33-35 °C | Very hot and busy - best early and late in the day |
Temperatures are approximate averages. Most restaurants, cafés and boutique hotels in Kaleiçi stay open all year, because the old town lives from city visitors and residents, not only from beach tourism.
Staying in the old town
Kaleiçi hotels are usually small, set in converted mansions around a courtyard or a small pool. Many lanes are pedestrian-only or too narrow for large vehicles, so a car often stops at the nearest gate or square and the last few metres are on foot. Tell us your hotel when you book; our drivers know which entrance is closest and help with your luggage.
Getting there from Antalya Airport
Kaleiçi is about 15 km from Antalya Airport, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road. The tram also links the airport with the city centre, but with suitcases a private transfer to your hotel is simpler, especially late at night. The price is fixed per vehicle, with no night surcharge.
