Cappadocia in winter is one of the most photographed landscapes in Türkiye: the fairy chimneys and valleys under snow, cave hotels with open fires and, on clear mornings, balloons rising over a white landscape. From Antalya it is a long but beautiful road trip - and a natural addition to a winter stay on the coast.
Winter weather: a different climate from the coast
Cappadocia sits on a high plateau at around 1,000 metres or more, so winter there is a real winter. Daytime temperatures are often close to freezing, nights are well below zero, and snow is common from December to February. Pack a proper winter coat, gloves, a hat and waterproof shoes - clothes that are right for Antalya in January are not enough here.
| Antalya coast | Cappadocia | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical winter day | about 15 °C | around 0-5 °C |
| Winter nights | about 6-8 °C | often below freezing |
| Snow | on the mountain peaks only | common from December to February |
Hot-air balloons in winter
Balloons fly all year when the weather allows, and a sunrise flight over snow-covered valleys is the image many people come for. Winter also brings more cancellations because of wind, fog or snow, and the decision is made by the authorities early each morning. Plan at least two nights in Cappadocia, so that one cancelled flight does not mean missing it altogether.
What to see in winter
- Göreme Open-Air Museum: rock-cut churches with frescoes, quieter in winter than at any other time of year.
- Underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı: several levels deep and a comfortable, constant temperature whatever the weather outside.
- Uçhisar Castle and the viewpoints above Göreme: the best places for snowy panoramas.
- Short walks in the Rose, Red and Love valleys on dry, clear days - the paths can be icy after snow.
- Cave hotels: many are heated and have fireplaces, and winter is the season when they feel most special.
The road from Antalya
The drive is about 540 km and usually takes 7 to 8 hours, crossing the Taurus mountains and continuing across the plateau via Konya. Konya, with the Mevlana Museum, is a natural stop to break the journey. In winter the mountain section can have snow and ice; roads are cleared, but a vehicle with winter equipment and a driver who knows the route make the difference between a long day and a stressful one.
How to plan the trip
- Allow at least two nights, better three, to leave room for balloon cancellations and short winter days.
- Leave Antalya in the morning to cross the mountains in daylight.
- Combine the trip with a stay on the coast: a few days in Antalya or Side, then Cappadocia, or the other way round.
- Book the cave hotel and any balloon flight early for the Christmas and New Year period.
